Building Bridges Day Program
Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) works in partnership with a Toronto Catholic District School Board teacher to provide a day treatment classroom aimed at addressing the needs of youth aged 12 to 17 who are unable to attend community school because of mental health concerns associated with school avoidance or refusal.
Our day program is one of very few that target the complex issue of school refusal. Treatment modalities include elements of cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, health teaching, individual, group and family therapy, community field trips and psychiatric support.
Classroom instruction is tailored to the individual needs of each student. This can include completion of high school credits and the creation of a mental health-based individual education plan (IEP).
Our day treatment team includes our classroom teacher, child and youth worker, outpatient nurse, social worker and child and adolescent psychiatrist. We also work closely with our community and school partners to form a larger team that allows for smoother transitions into community schools and services.
All referrals are made by the primary care physician.
