Join us for the upcoming 19th Annual MGH Palliative Care Symposium, Evolving Palliative Care: Meeting Changing Needs with Compassion, an inspiring professional learning event focused on the evolving role of palliative care in supporting patients, families, caregivers and healthcare teams. This symposium will bring together healthcare professionals and volunteers to explore compassionate, person-centred approaches to care, meaningful communication, ethical practice and innovation across settings.
Palliative care has significantly evolved since its early days as a concept for improving care of the dying. It has promised to deliver “a different kind of care” within a healthcare system that is often criticized for being fragmented, difficult to access and under strain. This presentation will reflect on notable developments in the field, from an interprofessional perspective as well as a personal one, and explore some of the opportunities and challenges facing us now and in the future.

Susan Blacker, MSW, RSW is the Senior Director, Community Partnerships, Cancer and Palliative Program Planning and Performance at Sinai Health in Toronto.
She is a Lecturer (status only) with the Division of Palliative Care, Department of Family and Community Medicine and also an Adjunct Professor with the Factor Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. She has taught in a broad range of interprofessional palliative care training programs in both Canada and the United States.
Over the past decade, Susan served as the regional and then provincial clinical co-lead for the Ontario Palliative Care Network and palliative care program at Ontario Health. She brings to this presentation more than 30 years of experience as a social worker, educator, health system leader and a caregiver. |

The symposium will bring back our Palliative Care Compassion Rounds with the theme: When I Would Choose Differently, where health care professionals will share their experiences of caring for patients whose choices may challenge their values, beliefs and sense of what is best.
