COVID-19 UPDATE

First case of COVID-19 confirmed at MGH, patient recovering in self-isolation at home

Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) received confirmation of a positive test result for COVID-19 from a patient who visited the Emergency Department (ED) on March 11. The patient’s condition did not require admission to hospital and the person was discharged home to follow self-isolation protocols.

The appropriate infection control measures and precautions were followed and there is no risk to others who were in the ED on that day.

The patient presented to the ED with respiratory symptoms and a history of travel. MGH’s ED team immediately isolated the patient and took the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of staff and other patients. Laboratory testing was conducted and results came back positive.

Toronto Public Health is working actively with officials to ensure anyone who may have been in contact with the individual prior to visiting the hospital is notified to control any spread of the virus.

MGH continues to work closely with Public Health Ontario, Toronto Public Health, system partners and other agencies to strengthen joint efforts to control spread of COVID-19.
