Navjot Kaur standing in MGH's pharmacy department

#IamMGH – Meet Navjot Kaur

#IamMGH tells the stories of our people. Meet Navjot Kaur, pharmacy technician at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH).

“I started working at Michael Garron Hospital in 2017 during a three month school placement. From day one, I just loved working here. When a full-time position became available in early 2019 I jumped at the opportunity to work at MGH again.

I’m so proud of my contributions as a pharmacy technician at MGH, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. I had the privilege of drawing the hospital’s first syringe of the COVID-19 vaccine back in December 2020. Since that day, I’ve drawn many more syringes of the vaccine, all of which have gone on to immunize my colleagues and other at-risk populations.

Within my role, I also helped create a how-to video for all hospital pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The video helps to demonstrate proper handwashing techniques, the steps for safely donning and doffing (putting on and taking off) personal protective equipment (PPE) and sterile IV bag preparation. The video is now a requirement for all new hires to watch prior to starting a positon within the department.

What I find most rewarding about my job is knowing that I play a significant role in a patient’s treatment and road to recovery. When picking medications, I always triple check my work as I know that my colleagues and our patients depend on the accuracy of what I’m providing, and the potentially severe consequences an error could cause. When patients are able to recover and go home as a result of medications I helped to prepare, it makes me feel really good!

I’m so honoured to work at Michael Garron Hospital; the pharmacy department truly feels like a family. Everyone knows each other and we support one another through both good and challenging times. We’re a team.”

Pharmacy Awareness Month is celebrated annually in March. Michael Garron Hospital would like to express its sincere appreciation and thanks to all its pharmacy staff and recognize the important role the team plays within the hospital, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
