MGH's 2026 Sustainability Report is now available

Caring for our community means caring for the planet, too. At Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), we consider sustainability when making big and small decisions throughout the hospital. This includes selecting sustainable food options for our inpatient menus, considering energy usage when scheduling our operating rooms (OR) and making energy efficient choices for our campus buildings.

MGH’s 2026 Sustainability Report documents this work across four key areas: how clinical and operational practices can reduce environmental impact while maintaining high-quality patient care; how the hospital’s building and energy systems are managed to reduce emissions and utility costs; how MGH works with its suppliers to source, reuse and dispose of products responsibly; and how sustainability is being built into the hospital’s long term strategy and governance.

The results reflect years of ongoing commitment: greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the hospital’s legacy buildings are now 40% below 2005 levels, meeting the federal target early and saving the hospital approximately $1 million in energy costs. A partnership with Stryker Canada to collect and reprocess single-use surgical instruments has reduced OR waste and generated $300,000 in savings. The Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre earned LEED Silver v4 certification, which recognizes its energy efficient design.

This work continues into 2027 – from reducing unnecessary disposable glove use across inpatient units to decommissioning centralized nitrous oxide to lower our emissions of that potent greenhouse gas.

The report is a look at what that commitment means in practice, and where it’s headed next.
