This milestone marked the end of the most ambitious phase of redevelopment in the hospital’s history.
The celebration brought together the many people who made this eight-year journey possible: the clinical and operational teams who delivered exceptional care through every phase of construction, the donors whose generosity helped fund the transformation, partners EllisDon and Infrastructure Ontario and the neighbours who showed patience and support throughout.
“This campus looks different now. It feels different,” said Melanie Kohn, President and CEO at MGH. “East Toronto deserves a hospital that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of the people who call this neighbourhood home – and that’s what this is.”
Following remarks from hospital and Michael Garron Hospital Foundation (the Foundation) leadership, attendees were invited to a ceremonial tree planting in the new green space, followed by a reception. It was a fitting close to a chapter years in the making.
Michael Holder, Board Chair at MGH, reflected on the scale of what the redevelopment delivered, from the Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre (Thomson Centre), the BMO Child and Youth Centre, to upgrades in our Margaret Chambers Diagnostic Imaging Department and 75 new treatment rooms.
Michael paid tribute to the staff who made it possible. “The project progressed in phases, with the hospital operating that whole time. It required an extraordinary level of planning and cooperation from our clinical and operational teams, who managed without ever pausing in patient care. This project would never have been possible without their efforts.”
Mitze Mourinho, President of the Foundation, thanked the nearly 30,000 donors who contributed $126 million towards the hospital’s redevelopment and most pressing needs. Our heartfelt gratitude to Myron and Berna Garron, and Peter and Diana Thomson, for their outstanding philanthropy.
The new Coxwell Entrance, spacious driveway and beautifully landscaped green spaces mark the finishing touches of this phase of the campus redevelopment, which offers an accessible, welcoming environment for patients, families and the East Toronto community for years to come.
