Tours & Classes

Beginning in July 2020 we will be offering online prenatal, baby care and grandparent classes. Tours and Infant CPR classes have been cancelled.  Watch a tour of the family birthing unit

PRENATAL and Postnatal CLASSES (online)

The prenatal portion of this program will prepare you for your birth and postpartum experiences. Discover what you might expect during childbirth and the early weeks with your baby. You will learn about the process of labour and birth, medical options and practices, practice non medical comfort measures such as breathing and massage, what to expect in the postpartum period and how to care for your newborn.

The postnatal portion of this program brings new parents and babies together, after birth, to share in the joys and challenges that come with parenthood. Topics covered include infant sleep, crying, postpartum mood conditions, starting solids, starting child care, safety at home and relationship changes that you may be experiencing with your partner, family and friends.

In every prenatal and postnatal class, you will have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss concerns and share ideas with other parents. We would love to see you and look forward to meeting you and your beautiful new baby.

We offer the flexibility of choosing a time that is convenient for you. Please choose one of the following two options:

Prenatal Childbirth Class - One Saturday 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Prenatal Childbirth Classes - Two Thursday Evenings 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

+ Prenatal Baby Care Class (one Tuesday or Thursday evening, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.) Prenatal Baby Care Class is included during class 3, Thursday evening 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
+ Postnatal Classes (4 Wednesday afternoons, 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.) + Postnatal Classes (4 Wednesday afternoons, 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

BREASTFEEDING CLASS (postponed) 

In the Breastfeeding Class participants learn what to expect when initiating breastfeeding, how to prepare, common challenges, baby positioning and more, along with an informative question and answer period.  It runs Monday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This class is $20.00 per couple (included with prenatal class registration). Please complete the Prenatal Class Registration Form and return in person to the hospital's Admitting Department or  Reception Desk on J7. 

BABY CARE CLASS (online)

In this class you will learn about newborn appearance, physical characteristics at birth, newborn behaviours, crying, all the benefits of skin to skin, sleep patterns, diapering, bathing, health and safety. This class runs on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. 

GRANDPARENT CLASS (online)

In this class, participants will learn how to support both adult children and new grandchildren during this exciting time in their lives. Learn of updated techniques, guidelines on caring for infants, major growth and development milestones for newborns and how to provide emotional support for new parents.  Classes are $30.00 per person and are held Sundays from 1:30-3:30 p.m.      

INFANT CPR CLASS (postponed) 

In the Infant C.P.R. class participants will learn life-saving techniques from Heart & Stroke infant CPR from certified instructors. Classes are offered on Thursday evenings. This class is $45.00 per person or $80.00 per couple. Please phone or come to the registration desk on J7 to complete the Prenatal Class Registration Form and return it in person.

BIRTHING OPTIONS: VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER C-SECTION (VBAC) CLASS

Having a vaginal birth after having a c-section is an option for some parents. Speak with your physician or midwife about whether a VBAC is a possibility for your next delivery. This class discusses risk factors and what happens during a trial of labour to help you make an informed decision about whether a VBAC could work for you. For information about these classes please call 416-469-6580 ext. 3196.
