Michael Garron Hospital’s new Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre
Michael Garron Hospital’s new Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre is now open.

All patient care areas now open in the Thomson Centre! 5 changes to know before your visit

We’re pleased to share that Michael Garron Hospital’s (MGH) new Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre (Thomson Centre) is now open for both outpatient and inpatient care.

The Thomson Centre is an eight-storey, state-of-the-art facility that is home to 215 inpatient beds and two floors of modern outpatient clinics. Located on MGH’s campus at Coxwell and Sammon Avenues, it is the centrepiece of the largest redevelopment project in the hospital’s history.

The Thomson Centre’s opening comes after a celebratory grand-opening event and successful moves for select outpatient and inpatient units.

To support your visit to the new building, we have implemented the following changes at MGH that help improve the experiences of patients, caregivers and visitors.

New location for Patient Registration

MGH’s Patient Registration, which was previously located on G1, has reopened in a new location on M1.

As always, all outpatients must register at Patient Registration before proceeding to their clinic appointment.

To find MGH’s new Patient Registration:

  • From the Coxwell Avenue entrance: Enter the hospital and walk past the Information Desk and straight down the main hallway. After you pass Subway, turn right and walk into the Thomson Centre Lobby (M1). Patient Registration is located on the left, adjacent to the lobby once you’ve passed the Moez & Marissa Kassam Food Court

  • From the Sammon Avenue entrance: Walk through the doors and past the main elevators into the Thomson Centre lobby (M1). Patient Registration is located adjacent to the lobby on the right.

  • From the Thomson Centre underground parking garage: Take the parking elevators to the ground floor. Upon exiting the elevator, turn left into the Thomson Centre Lobby. Patient Registration is located adjacent to the lobby on the right.

New locations for many outpatient clinics

Many of MGH’s outpatient clinics have re-located to the Thomson Centre and some now have slightly different names.

To find your clinic: All patients must visit Patient Registration before attending their appointment (see above). At Patient Registration, clerks will hand patients a wayfinding slip directing them to their clinic’s new location.

NEW entrance open on Sammon Avenue

In addition to MGH’s Coxwell Avenue entrance, the hospital has opened an entrance on Sammon Avenue between Coxwell Avenue and Knight Street.

Due to detours related to MGH’s campus renovations, it is recommended that all patients and visitors use the Sammon Avenue entrance for entering and exiting the hospital.

For those arriving by vehicle, there is a pick-up and drop-off lane on Sammon Avenue located just beside the doors. This curb lane is for pick-ups and drop-offs only, and parking is not permitted.

Entrance Hours

  • Coxwell Avenue entrance: Every day, from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Sammon Avenue entrance: Every day, from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Stavro Emergency Department (Mortimer Avenue): Open 24 hours, seven days a week. Please use this entrance for any after-hours appointments.

Volunteers stationed in Thomson Centre

To provide navigation assistance, MGH is stationing additional volunteers in the Thomson Centre at a new secondary Information Desk, located inside the doors of the Sammon Avenue entrance.

If you have any questions or need navigation assistance, please visit the volunteers at one of our two information desks:

  • Coxwell Lobby Information Desk located inside the Coxwell Avenue entrance: Open every day, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Sammon Avenue Information Desk located inside the Sammon Avenue entrance: Open every day, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our teams, patients and community for their support of MGH’s redevelopment project so far. The opening of the Thomson Centre marks a significant milestone that ushers in a new era of healthcare for the East Toronto community.

While the Thomson Centre is the centrepiece of MGH’s campus transformation, the larger project will continue until 2024 with renovations to existing areas of the hospital, decommissioning of outdated wings and new greenery and landscaping to welcome the community to the new facility.
