Safety Starts with Us: Michael Garron Hospital launches new five-year Quality and Patient Safety Strategic Plan

Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) is proud to announce the launch of the Safety Starts with Us Quality and Patient Safety Strategic Plan 2026-2031.

This plan is our commitment to every patient, family member, staff member, credentialed clinician, volunteer and community member who walks through our doors: that we will do everything within our power to protect them and deliver care at the highest possible standard.

This plan will guide MGH’s safety transformation and High Reliability Organization (HRO) journey as we uphold our commitment to zero preventable harm and creating a culture at MGH where everyone – including our patients, families and community – can count on us to anticipate risks, learn continuously and deliver safe, high-quality care during each interaction.

This plan advances our broader vision of Integrating Care. Bold Impact outlined in our organizational Strategic Plan. It will also help us achieve our ultimate goal of becoming the safest hospital in Canada.

What this plan includes:

This plan will guide our hospital’s quality and patient safety transformation through five pillars:

  • Build Reliable Systems for Zero Harm
  • Transform Our Policy and Process
  • Support Our People to Create Change
  • Harness Quality and Safety Data
  • Centre Health Equity and the Patient Voice

Each of these pillars includes clear strategies that we will use to accomplish our goals.

How this plan was made:

Recognizing that quality and patient safety is woven throughout every part of the organization, this plan was created with collaboration from programs, teams and committees throughout the hospital. This includes input from:

  • 402 touchpoints with patients, staff, physicians, leaders and volunteers
  • 43 engagement and design meetings
  • 20 programs and services
  • 12 organizational committees
  • review of leading practices and emerging trends across healthcare and High Reliability Organizations

Each of these individuals offered their own diverse expertise, ensuring that this plan reflects the voices of those directly impacted by it.

We are very proud of this plan and excited for our upcoming safety transformation. We hope you will join us on this journey – read the plan here.
