A year in reflection: Highlighting our 2025 achievements and the people that made them possible

To our community,

As we wrap up 2025, we are reflecting on a year filled with inspiration, growth and proud moments for both Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) and Michael Garron Hospital Foundation. We are deeply grateful for everything you’ve done to support our work and strengthen our impact.

This year, we launched our new 10-year strategic plan: Integrating Care. Bold Impact. This plan will guide us through the next decade as we respond to the needs of our evolving community and build a bright, thriving future for our hospital. Its development involved extensive consultation and engagement, including invaluable insights from patients, families, caregivers, staff and community members. Your experiences and voices helped shape our plan, including our ongoing commitment to deliver compassionate, high-quality and innovative healthcare.

Our dedication to excellence was recognized this year when we were awarded Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, the highest level of achievement that a healthcare organization can attain. In addition to this exceptional ranking, we achieved a total survey score of 99.9 per cent – the highest in MGH’s history. These remarkable results reflect our unwavering focus on providing safe, high-quality care that exceeds national standards.

As East Toronto continues to grow, with developments along the Eglinton Line and in the Port Lands and the Golden Mile expected to attract tens of thousands of new residents in the coming years, we’re building capacity

With the help of donors and supporters, we successfully funded the expansion of our Cedric E. Ritchie Cath Lab, infrastructure for patient-oriented research and the purchase of a new da Vinci Surgical System. We also refreshed the Dialysis Unit, brought in a new CT scanner, purchased two new ECG machines for our Stavro Emergency Department (ED) and more. At the same time, the redevelopment of the hospital’s campus continues, with our outdated wings now demolished to make way for a convenient pick-up and drop-off area for patients and visitors.

This is just some of the progress that our donors enabled over the last year. You are pivotal to inspiring the generosity of our community and your dedication speaks volumes to everyone who relies on us for great care. You’re the very reason so many people we serve choose to give back. Thank you for everything you do.

We have a lot to be proud of at MGH, and it’s our people and community that make it so great. This year, we were named one of Greater Toronto's Top Employers for the tenth consecutive year . We were also awarded the 2025 Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Culture Award, and as a longstanding recipient, were placed in the Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Culture Hall of Fame. These honours are a testament to our dedication to fostering a workplace grounded in inclusion, compassion and respect, where people can grow and thrive in their healthcare careers. We have also remained steadfast in our commitment to working with our Ontario Health Team, East Toronto Health Partners, to meet the health and social needs of our community.

As we enter the holiday season, we have shared some of our proudest achievements of 2025 below. Many of these successes were made possible by you – our dedicated teams, donors, partners and community. We hope you take pride in celebrating these accomplishments as much as we do.

Wishing you a safe and healthy holiday season and a happy New Year.

Looking back on our clinical enhancements and advancements

This year, we launched several new services while also enhancing existing ones, advancing our clinical offerings for our patients and community-at-large.

At the start of this year, we introduced intraoperative parathyroid testing – a rapid blood test done during parathyroid surgery which allows surgeons to quickly confirm if they have removed all abnormal parathyroid glands causing hyperparathyroidism in a patient. This improvement was made possible by the installation of two new pieces of equipment in the Laboratory Medicine Department, one of which was acquired with the support of MGH Foundation donors. This new service further positions MGH as provincial leader in endocrine surgeries.

Early in the year, we opened our new midwife-led Family and Newborn (FAN) Clinic which provides rapid access to essential postnatal care for newborns and parents who do not have access to a primary care provider. The FAN Clinic helps decrease the length of patient stays at the hospital and the number of families seeking non-urgent postnatal care through the ED.

In October, our Extensive Needs Service proudly opened the doors to its new larger, dedicated clinical space. This new program, which provides wraparound clinical services for children with complex needs, is already making an impact on patients and families. The new space allows for more enhanced offerings for clients, families and the program team.

In the fall, we launched the Psychiatric Emergency Zone (PEZ) – a new model that improves mental health and substance use care for patients in the ED. The model includes increased staffing, specialized care and capacity to accommodate children and youth. It can also accommodate shorter stays for those who may not need admission but could benefit from shorter-term stabilization.

Finally, we recently launched a new primary care navigation clinic, bridging a critical gap by providing hospital patients who do not have a family doctor with direct access to primary care. This clinic is operated in partnership with East Toronto Health Partners Ontario Health Team (ETHP OHT), Flemingdon Health Centre, and TNO – The Neighbourhood Organization, reinforcing the impact of our community partnerships.

These clinical enhancements and advancements all help us fulfill our purpose of delivering exceptional and seamless care for our communities with valued partnerships and a spirit of innovation and discovery that inspires our people

Celebrating the people who make it possible

Every day at MGH, our people bring compassion, expertise and heart to the communities we serve. This year offered countless reminders of how deeply staff, physicians, learners and volunteers embody the spirit of great care.

In the spring, we recognized the dedication of hospital staff members celebrating career milestones at our annual Long Service Awards reception. The reception is an opportunity to celebrate and thank staff for their dedication and delivery of exceptional and seamless care to our communities while also highlighting their thousands of combined years of service that strengthen our hospital.

Our commitment to lifelong learning and mentorship was reflected through this year’s cohort of co-op and summer students who joined us across clinical and non-clinical departments. Through hands-on opportunities and guidance from supportive mentors, they shared how their time at the hospital shaped their skills, development and career aspirations. Their experiences demonstrate our commitment to fostering meaningful learning environments.

This year, we also expanded our teaching opportunities by welcoming our newest cohort of learners from a range of disciplines. Their arrival reflects our commitment to training the next generation of healthcare professionals and strengthening our role as a teaching hospital where people come to learn, contribute and deliver excellence in patient care.

We’re also proud to be recognized as one of Greater Toronto Area’s Top Employers for the tenth consecutive year, one of Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures and were inducted into Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Culture Hall of Fame. These achievements reflect our commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive workplace where our people feel valued and can grow to achieve their greatest potential.

Our people are the foundation of everything we do and we’re grateful every day for their dedication, compassion and commitment to delivering high-quality patient care.

Historic wings come down as our new campus takes shape

We reached a significant milestone in our campus transformation project this year.

In the spring, the last patients from the historic A and B wings into newly opened and renovated clinical spaces. Shortly after, our volunteer-run General Store celebrated its grand opening in its new space in G1 near the Moez & Marissa Kassam Food Court.

Finally, MGH ended a 75-year chapter in its history with the demolition of the historic A, B, C and F Wings. We have taken care to honour our past while building for the future by preserving some of the most treasured elements – like the stained-glass Second World War memorial and cornerstones – all of which will have proud new homes once the redevelopment project concludes.

Behind every phase of this project is the exceptional effort and commitment of all MGH staff, who have navigated these changes with professionalism and care. Thank you for your continued support. We’re also deeply grateful to our funders, including the Ministry of Health, and donors to the Foundation, whose support has made this transformation come to life. To our neighbours and community, thank you for your ongoing patience and support as we build for our shared future.

Furthering excellence with donor support

Together with the hospital team, Michael Garron Hospital Foundation is building a culture of philanthropy within our walls and throughout our communities.

When donors heard our da Vinci Surgical System needed replacement, they stepped in to help purchase a new model. This allowed us to bring the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery to more patients, including those with lung, kidney and prostate cancers.

Donors also enable the team in our Stavro Emergency Department (ED) to respond to unprecedented volumes with time-saving innovation. Among our supporters, ED physicians helped fund a scribe tool that helps them save up to two hours per shift to see more patients and strengthen doctor-patient connections.

This year, 570 of our friends and neighbours joined us for East End Adventure, a new event that invites participants to enjoy a family-friendly festival and scavenger hunt through the area.

Proceeds are already hard at work supporting the hospital’s most pressing needs and emerging priorities. That’s everything from state-of-the-art equipment and modern spaces to community-based programs and research that enhance patient care.

Hospital staff, physicians and midwives assembled teams for the event. And these very same people inspired participation from the great many who turn to our hospital for help at some of the most challenging times in their lives. Thank you for filling their healthcare journeys with your care and compassion.

And thank you for giving so generously to the heart of the east.
