Meet Camille Chan, Registered Nurse at Michael Garron Hospital

Tell us about yourself!

Hi, I’m Camille, and I’m a Registered Nurse in the Family Birthing Centre at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH). I care for both moms and babies during one of the most special times in their lives. I joined MGH in 2022 and it’s been an amazing journey so far.

What motivated you to join MGH?

I’ve lived in this community my whole life and MGH has always felt close to home.

When I was growing up, my neighbour worked here and always spoke so highly of the hospital – the people, the culture and the care. Hearing his stories and knowing MGH’s great reputation made it an easy decision to apply once I graduated from nursing school.

What types of learning, mentorship or professional development opportunities have you had since joining MGH?

My role is very dynamic where no two days are ever the same.

As a labour and delivery nurse, I support families through every step of the birthing process: answering questions, providing comfort through contractions, coaching during pushing and helping families have the birth experience they hope for.

I’ve also learned to scrub in and circulate for both planned and emergency c-sections, which have expanded my skills and confidence.

Another part of my role that I love is being a preceptor for nursing students. It’s rewarding to help them learn and grow. I try to create a supportive environment just like my preceptors did for me when I was a student. That experience had such a big impact on me, and I want to do the same for others.

What motivates or inspires you?

Definitely my team. I work with an incredible group of nurses. The senior nurses are knowledgeable and kind, and I was lucky to start alongside a cohort of new grads who have become some of my closest friends. We support each other through everything.

I’m also really inspired by the women I care for. There’s something powerful about women supporting women through labour and birth. The trust and connection that forms in those moments is something I’ll never take for granted.

If you could share one memorable moment from your time at MGH, what stands out to you?

Recently, I was caring for a patient who was giving birth to their second child. When she mentioned her first child’s name, it sounded so familiar and then it clicked. I had been her nurse during her first delivery, too!

She remembered me, and during her stay I even got to meet her first child who is now a little toddler. It was such a heartwarming experience and one of those full-circle moments that reminds me why I love what I do.

Even though I’m still early in my nursing career, being part of both of her birth stories felt incredibly special.
