Overview

Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret inf ormation, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal exper tise, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communic ation in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers. Responsible for the provision of comprehensive psychiatric nursing care including holistic assessments of patients and families, individual supportive counseling, group ther apies, psycho-education activities and groups, and administration of long-acting depot medications.

Education

- Registered Practical Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Completion of a mental health nursing course from accredited college, or a commitment to attend and complete the education within one year of hire
- Therapeutic and psycho-educational group experience required
-Training with cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, solution focused therapy an asset
- Experience with long-acting neuroleptic depot medications and clozapine therapy required

Qualifications

- Current mental health experience with a minimum of 3 years of recent experience in an acute care mental health setting, day treatment setting, or outpatient mental health setting required.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to, implement, and evalua te multidisciplinary plans of care
- Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act
- Sound knowledge of counseling and therapeutic techniques
- Demonstrated ability to implement plan of care including independent and interdependent nursing
functions
-D emonstrated ability to participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements including the collection of workload statistics
-Demonstrated ability to use cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, and indiv idual supportive counseling

- Demonstrated motivation to pursue educational goals
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team
- Demonstratedu nderstanding of accountability based practice
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Good work and attendance record required
