#IamMGH – Meet Nabal

#IamMGH tells the story of our people. In commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife, we would like you to meet Nabal, midwife working in East Toronto. She joined the The Midwives' Clinic six years ago after completing her training in midwifery with Ryerson University.

“I always read about midwives in historical texts and novels. One time, a registered midwife came to my high school to tell us about midwifery and how it is practiced today. I loved the thought of being part of this group of birth workers who have been around for ages. But, I also understood that midwifery today was a little different. Today, midwives give evidence-based care – we care for both mom and baby. The skills midwives are doing today are so expanded. It sounded great!

I let go of the idea of being a midwife for a few years until I finished my nursing degree. At one point, I brought up the idea of applying to be a midwife to my parents and they really encouraged me to pursue it. I wouldn’t have done it without them!

I worked as a registered nurse before I became a midwife. I loved nursing for so many reasons. There is an art to nursing that is a combination of the caring and clinical, very similar to how I work as a midwife. I enjoyed bedside nursing because it allowed us to get to know patients, similar to the way we prioritize continuity with our clients as midwives. I truly believe that knowing our clients ensures we give the best care!

I feel so fortunate to be a midwife working in East Toronto and with MGH. Our Family Birthing Centre is a great space for collaboration with great staff.”
