Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to coll ect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and jud gment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as wi th effective communication in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers.

Education

- Registered Practical Nursing diploma with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BLS required.
- Current Medication Administration Certificate.
- Completion of RPN assessment course required.
- 2 years recent ventilation/respiratory experience preferred.
- 2 years recent oncology/hematology preferred.
- 2 years recent general medicine experience preferred.
- Recent education related to hematology, oncology, general medicine and respir atory care preferred.
- Successful completion of the MGH respiratory/PWC education/training within 6 months.

Qualifications

- 2-3 years of recent continuous experience and demonstrated competence in IV therapy including challenging IV starts.
- Must be prepared to work in all areas of the Medicine Health Service.
- Maintains competence relative to current practices.
-De monstrates expertise in respiratory practice including the management of tracheostomies.
- Demonstrated clinical experience in providing care to patients with COPD, pneumonia and asthma.
- Demonstrated clinical experience in providing care to patien ts with oncological and haematological conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to teach patients and families.
- Maintains competence relative to current practices.
- Demonstrated competence and recent experience in management of central venous access devices (CVAD), including assisting the physician with insertion.
- Demonstrated competence and recent experience in management of chest tubes, including assisting the physician with insertion.
- Demonstrated competence and recent experience in mana gement of continuous ambulatory delivery device (CADD).
- Demonstrates ability to effectively participate with the interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to de-escalate situations as they arise.
- Demonstrates use of Core Service Standards.
- Demonstrates a commitment to continued professional and personal growth and development through continuing education programs a nd self-directed learning opportunities.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated computer literacy.
- Demonstrated ability to follow instruction and pay attention to detail.
- Demonstrate s excellent organizational skills, able to prioritize and multi-task efficiently.
- Demonstrated ability to work to full scope of practice as defined by unit.
- Demonstrated ability to follow standards, policies and procedures.
- Good work and att endance record is required.
