Overview

Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interpret infor mation, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill and judgment, personal experti se, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communicat ion in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers.

Education

- Registered Practical Nursing diploma with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BCLS required.
- Current Medication Administration Certificate.
- Recent work experience in a Hematology Outpati ent Clinic required.
- Completion of RPN assessment course required.

Qualifications

- Must be prepared to work in all areas of the Medicine Health Service.
- Maintains competence relative to current practices.
- Demonstrates expertise in Hematology practice.
- 2 years’ experience in Hematology nursing required.
- 2-3 years of r ecent continuous experience and demonstrated competence in IV therapy including challenging IV starts.
- Demonstrated competence and recent experience in management of central venous access devices (PICC, Hickman, Port-a-Cath catheters).
- Must be ab le demonstrate knowledge of current blood product transfusion protocols.
- Demonstrates ability to effectively participate with interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrates good interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates use of Core Service Standards.
- Demo nstrates a commitment to pursuing educational goals.
- Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively.
- Demonstrates excellent observational skills.
- Demonstrates excellent organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work to full scope of practice as defined by unit.
- Excellent time management and attendance record required.
