Overview

Registered Practical Nurses possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, and
procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and
family-centered care.

RPNs apply these competencies to collect and interp ret information, make appropriate
nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration
with the Registered Nurse, RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their
clinical knowledge, skill and judgm ent, personal expertise, the healthcare setting and the
patient’s preferences. The role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical
competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as
well as wi th effective communication in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers.

Education

- Registered Practical Nurse with current Certificate of Competence issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BCLS mandatory.
- Completion of ACLS preferred.

Qualifications

- Two (2) years of recent Acute Surgical and/or Medical experience such as ER/ICU/Recovery nursing experience in the last 5 years required.
- Previous experience in a Medical Triage Clinic and/or ER an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to interview skillsi nperson and/or virtually to obtain patient health assessment skills (required).
- Demonstrated knowledge of surgical /medicalprocedures required.
- Demonstrated understanding of Adult learning principles required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communi cation skills (written and verbal) required.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with IV / Blood Procurement, ECG, Wound care management required.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
- Demonstrated competence and willingness tow ork at the full scope of practice (as
outlined by CNO).
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and have superior organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability tou tilize critical thinking and problem solving.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements.
- Good work and attendance record required.
- Staff is accountable to units team agreement.
- Position is required to ro tate to other Surgical/Medicine clinics.
- Must be willing to work in all areas of the Surgery Health Service (skills & abilities considered).
- Work involves lifting, considerable walking and/or sitting, standing, bending, pushing
And pulling of equi pment.
