Overview

Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, and procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. RPNs apply these competencies to collect and inte rpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse (RN), RPNs apply these competencies within the boundaries of their knowledge, skill, judgment,pers onal expertise, the healthcare setting and the patient's preferences. The role is guided by code of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, their care is characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effectivec ommunication in partnership with patients and families. Under the direction of a RN, assists and scrubs for ambulatory procedures which includes and not limited to Endoscopy, Urology, and Minor Surgery. Is responsible to assist with patient care both pre /post procedure care as established by the Standards of Nursing Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario and the standards of nursing care of this Hospital.

Education

- Registered Practical Nurse with current certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- PeriAnesthesia Certificate required and/or a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in an acute care hospital setting in the Post-Anesthe tic Care unit recovering patients in Phase I and II (within the last five (5) years).
- Current BCLS mandatory with completion of ACLS and PALS within eight (8) months of hire and recertified every two years.

Qualifications

- At least one year experience in the last 2 years in assisting with endoscopic procedures including and not limited to Gastro/colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, ERCP procedures within a Endoscopic environment or Operating Room required.
- Demonstrated experie nce and competence within the last 2 years in electrocautery use, applications and safety required.
- Demonstrated proficiency in I.V. insertion and therapy required.
- Post anaesthesia care experience (1st/2nd stage recovery) required.
- Demonstrated experience in endoscope cleaning, handling and care.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of adult learning principles when teaching patients, their families, colleagues and students.
- Demonstrated knowledge of infection control.
- Demonstrated motivation to pursue educational goals.
- Strong leadership skills and experience taking the lead in multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to implement plan of care including independent and interdependent nursing functions.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements including the collection of workload statistics.
- Demonstrated understanding of accountability base d practice; Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good work and attendance record required.
CSGNA membership an asset.
- Must be prepared to work in all areas of Surgery.
