Our Family Birthing Centre (FBC) has bright and spacious labour and delivery suites to accommodate and support you during labour and birth. Our staff always strive to provide culturally sensitive care during your stay and are committed to meeting your birthing wishes and desires.

Our FBC Team at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) includes highly trained obstetricians, midwives, family doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, dieticians, certified childbirth educators and lactation consultants. Given our affiliation with the University of Toronto and other academic institutions, your care team may also involve students and learners.

choosing a care provider

One of the first choices you will need to make is who will provide your prenatal care. Your choices include:

Obstetrician

We have 12 obstetricians on staff with diverse and specialized skills to provide evidence-based care for our patients. They provide family- and patient-centered care for low-risk births, as well as for patients with health complications or who are facing high-risk situations. They provide prenatal, labour, childbirth and postnatal care, as well as other reproductive health care such as preconceptional counselling, fertility, contraceptive planning and gynaecological care. Please call the individual physician’s community office directly for pregnancy care or have your family physician fax a referral to their office.

Family Practice Obstetrician

Family practice obstetricians are family physicians who specialize in obstetrics care for pregnant individuals with low-risk pregnancies, but who are also trained to manage common health problems along the way. We apply a primary care lens to the pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, which allows us to provide holistic care to you as a whole person. We see prenatal patients across multiple clinics in East York. Please visit our Family Practice Obstetrics Group webpage for information on how to refer (including self-referral).

Midwife

We have 26 midwives who work out of The Midwives' Clinic of East York-Don Mills and six midwives who work out of the MATCH (Midwifery and Toronto Community Health) Program at South Riverdale Community Health Centre. Midwives are free in Ontario, even if you do not have OHIP.

  • The Midwives’ Clinic of East York-Don Mills: Located in Thorncliffe Park, these midwives are specialists in low-risk pregnancy, labour and birth. They also have excellent breastfeeding success rates. Your midwives will do home visits in the first week postpartum and care for you and your baby for six weeks after your birth. Your team of midwives will be on call for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please call 416-424-1976 or visit The Midwives’ Clinic of East York-Don Mills’ website to learn more or book an appointment.
  • MATCH (Midwifery and Toronto Community Health) Program at South Riverdale Community Health Centre: This is a smaller team of midwives who accept patients from focused priority communities at South Riverdale Community Health Centre (955 Queen St. E.) MATCH offers a wide variety of services related to well-gynecological and pregnancy care, including:
    • Pregnancy, labour and birth, and postpartum care for infants and adults (including infants born by surrogacy to 2SLGBTQI+ families)
    • Medication abortion care until 11 weeks
    • Miscarriage care with medications until 13 weeks
    • Abortion care navigation to any gestation
    • Pregnancy options counselling
    • Please call 416-461-2493 for patient intake or visit the MATCH Program's website to learn more.
