The Emergency Department provides Personal Support Workers a unique opportunity to grow and utilize their skills. The MGH Emergency Department provides care for over 90,000 annually and takes pride in se rving East Toronto’s diverse population. This dynamic, community oriented program has a team who are committed to learning and providing excellent patient care. You will work with a diverse, supportive interprofessional team that are welcoming and suppor tive of new staff.

What to expect:
As a member of the Emergency Department team, you will:
- Assist patients with activities of daily living and promote the provision of patient-centered care.
- Perform activities directed and assi gned by a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse for which appropriate education and training has been completed.
- Participate in direct and indirect patient care activities in order to carry out the interprofessional care plan.
- Support pati ents’ independence, dignity and well-being.
- Assist in patient movement throughout the department.
- Be responsible for delivery of specimen to the laboratory.
- The opportunity to work with individuals of all ages.
- The opportunity to work with in dividuals from low acuity to high acuity of care.
- An orientation schedule tailored to the needs of the individual.

Education

- A Personal Support Worker certificate or diploma from an accredited college.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification required.
- Ability to speak, read, write and comprehend the English language.

Qualifications

- 1 - 2 years of recent relevant work experience.
- Recent clinical experience and/or practicum experience in a hospital setting is considered an asset.
- Willingness to work in all areas of the health service (skills & abilities considered).
- Kn owledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation.
- Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
- Knowledge of Hospital and departmental policies, procedures, protocols, practices and Emergency Cod es.
- Work is moderately heavy involving lifting, considerable walking, and standing, bending, pushingand pulling of equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of infection control.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude and the willingness to work effectivel y in a team.
- Demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development.
- Demonstrated aptitude to foster caring and trusting relationships with patients and families in an effort to support patient focused care.
- Ability to demo nstrate skill competency in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to maintain a consistent level of productivity and efficiency.
- Ability to perform responsibilities in a courteous manner.
- Compliance with confidentiality requirements under MGH Pri vacy Policy.
- Commitment to unit-specific education and other training identified as necessary to practice safely and competently on the unit
- Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; patient service oriented, with the abil ity to effectively work with diversity.
- Good work and attendance record is required.
